DreamWeek San Antonio · 2013 – 2027

15years of exchanging ideas, inspiring discussion, and igniting change.

What we began in 2013 as a spark beside the nation's largest MLK march has grown into the largest community-curated event of its kind in the nation — our whole city, every January, choosing dialogue over division.

Before Year One

A mayor's challenge became a movement.

In 2011, Mayor Julián Castro challenged our city's advertising agencies to build cultural and educational events around one of the nation's largest MLK marches — a call to promote the open exchange of ideas. Our founder, Shokare Nakpodia of The Mighty Group, answered, standing up DreamVoice in 2012 to carry the work.

We named it DreamWeek — after Dr. King's 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech — around a single purpose we still hold: to create open, civil spaces where a whole community can exchange ideas for the common good.

A year later, in 2013, the dream had a date on the calendar. Today we carry it forward as DreamGlobal Inc. — our newly launched 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the presenter of DreamWeek moving forward.

DreamWeek is one of the most forward-looking and iconic developments in San Antonio in the last decade.

The Growth Curve

From 35 events to the nation's largest community-curated summit.

DreamWeek is programmed by the community itself. Bars from 2018 onward are actual event counts from the DWSA events archive; earlier years reflect documented milestones. The 2021 dip is the ten-day virtual summit held during the pandemic.

Inception & Introduction

Our spark catches. What we launch as a twelve-day experiment beside the nation’s largest MLK march becomes an annual civic ritual — and our city starts hosting its own dream.

20131st Summit · Inaugural

DreamWeek debuts: 35 events hosted by 20 partners, built around the city's historic MLK march. More than 60 lectures, speakers and symposiums in and around downtown.

Theme: “Connections”

Fifteen years of threads — conversations, collaborations and shared visions — woven into the tapestry of a city. What began as a spark is now a permanent beacon. And this year we mark a new beginning of our own: the launch of DreamGlobal Inc., our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, as the presenter of DreamWeek moving forward. The next chapter is yours to help write.

The Honor Roll · 15 Years

Thank you to the sowers of dreams.

DreamWeek is our community’s investment in its own future. Across fifteen years, 734 event hosts, 42 sponsors, and dozens of advertisers, venues and media partners have kept these ideas promoted — and kept them free. We are grateful to every one.

Compiled from the DWSA sponsorship tracker (2016–2026), the DreamWeek events archive (2018–2026), the DreamWeek Overview booklet's Past Partners roll, and the 2024 Summit Schedule. Sponsor records for 2013–2015 and 2018–2019 are not itemized in the tracker; hosts from 2013–2017 predate the digital events archive. If a name is missing, tell us and we'll add it with pride.

Presented by DreamGlobal Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the presenter of DreamWeek moving forward. The vision began in 2012 with DreamVoice, founded by Shokare Nakpodia of The Mighty Group in answer to Mayor Julián Castro's 2011 challenge. Produced alongside the City of San Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and one of the nation's largest MLK marches. Archival photography by Sarah Brooke Lyons, with additional coverage by Anthony Francis, Zak Seibert and Jackie Wang. Press citations courtesy of the San Antonio Public Library DreamWeek guide.
