As part of the city’s annual Dream Week celebration, the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will offer its annual Buffalo Soldier Day, giving guests an opportunity to learn of the African American legacy in the United States Army. Buffalo Soldiers served in cavalry and infantry regiments assigned to Texas. Their duties included scouting and mapping the frontier, protecting the mail, building telegraph lines and keeping the peace. The day’s activities will center on the Back 40 living history area with its 1800s period buildings. Guests may also explore an exhibit that traces the military service of African American men and women from the Texas Frontier to San Antonio today.
