The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability, invites the community to immerse themselves in an exhibition dedicated to climate, the environment and community response. Resilient and Responsive: Artists and the Environment explores our understanding of science, nature and impact on the natural world. Through 28 artworks by 14 San Antonio artists, this exhibition prompts conversations around our environment and provokes calls to action in support of San Antonio’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan.

“We are excited to share how art can educate and empower our residents through shared interests, highlighting the community’s robust participation in our climate planning efforts,” said Chief Sustainability Officer Douglas Melnick. “This exhibit complements other ways our City is committed to climate action; we hope when residents visit the gallery, they will respond to the call to action and be inspired to take part in safeguarding our City’s sustainability and resilience.”

The exhibit features works by artists Margaret Craig, Manuel Davila, Celeste De Luna, Aminah Decé, Kwanzaa Edwards, Jose Esquivel, Audrya Flores, Jacob Garza, Lindsey Hurd, Marcos Medellin, Ashley Mireles, Linda Monsivais Hernandez, Doerte Weber and Andrea Willems. The artworks feature a range of traditional art mediums, as well as non-traditional repurposed and sustainable materials.

“These artists used their boundless imaginations to convey topical themes such as developing healthy ecosystems, ensuring equity in adaptation and reducing carbon footprints,” said Department of Arts & Culture Executive Director Krystal Jones. “Several artists also created their artworks on mediums including reused fabric materials, natural pigments, discarded plastic and organic materials, demonstrating the endless possibilities provided in a circular economy.”

Showcased at the Culture Commons Gallery, which is always free for the public to visit, the exhibit will be on display April 11 – January 17, 2025. Recurring weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
