Arte y Pasión is proud to present MERCURIA, on January 26 at 7pm at the Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex. MERCURIA is an anthem to the impossible choices women must make in pursuit of their own agency. The project is a series of vignettes in an exploration in poetry, music and movement with Tamara Adira, La Memphi, Jose Manuel Tejeda, and Poet Laureate Andrea Vocab Sanderson. The project is under the direction of TAMARA ADIRA under the mentorship of BELEN MAYA.
Women worldwide are faced with impossible choices in their pursuit of own personal agency. These productions are presented for empowerment of the individual, both women and men, in understanding and supporting women’s rights and issues. We must make compassionate choices to survive and thrive as a race. By elevating women, we elevate all of humanity.
Arte y Pasión, led by Tamara Adira, is a company known for pushing the boundaries of flamenco and Spanish dance, and one of the most contemporary flamenco companies in the United States, whose mission is to share, promote and develop the authentic art of flamenco as a vehicle of healing and restoration, and the promotion of human rights and equality. While the company is comprised of flamenco dance, guitar and flamenco singing, Arte y Pasión is known for having weaved into its artistic vocabulary disciplines such as modern dance, spoken word, fine and performance art to tell a story more fully. The company engages regularly with acclaimed flamenco artists from Spain, France and around the world, via mentorship and co-performance, exploring artistic evolution and specific subject matter to elevate the purity of flamenco to an electrifying theatrical event.
Artistic Director Tamara Adira produces this production under the mentorship of the great Belen Maya, who has been called “one of the most important flamenco dancers of this century.” As the daughter of the legendary Mario Maya, who single-handedly revolutionized flamenco through his choreography and large-format company, Belén Maya was born into greatness. However, Belen has managed to build a stellar reputation that’s based more on her own work and personal style than on her family name. Belén is tremendously prolific, with work oscillating between the traditional and the contemporary, and she regularly tours the world performing and teaching.
Tickets are $30 for general admission with $15 Zoom and standing room only at Brick, with sponsorship options available. For more information call 210.241.2771 or visit www.arte-y-pasion.com.
