Southwest School of Art (SSA) along with the San Antonio Central Library and Hawthorn Academy recently created partnerships to start visual conversations about current social issues through a unique art experience. Community Conversation Quilts came from those experiences.
The Southwest School of Art introduced an ancient technique called Batik to community groups at the San Antonio Central Library and groups of students from Hawthorne Academy. Participants created 2 – 12 inch by 12 inch squares inspired by themes such as the environment, pollution, global warming, food supply, immigration, literacy and the Monarch butterfly; one to keep and one to contribute to the making of community quilts.
The quilts will be unveiled on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11:30 am in the lobby of the Santikos Building at Southwest School of Art as the school celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Saturday Morning Discovery program which provides free art experience for children ages 5-17.
