We will discuss gender identity, the transgender experience, and who should have the power to determine and assign gender. What does it mean to be a man or a woman? Why does that matter? Can the experience of transgender and gender non-conforming people help us understand what it means to be human?

ABOUT ASHLEY SMITH

Ashley Smith is an architect, a proponent of civic engagement, and an advocate for transgender equality. Originally from Alabama, Ashley graduated from Cornell University and settled in Texas, where she has worked for several design firms.

Ashley is the President of the San Antonio Gender Association (SAGA). She currently serves on the City of San Antonio Affirmative Action Advisory Committee and Mayor Ron Nirenberg’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee.

In 2017, Smith drew attention to the Texas bathroom bill controversy when she took a snapshot with Gov. Greg Abbott, a proponent of the legislation. Her photo went viral, and since then, she has appeared in local and national media to advocate for transgender rights.
