Event Details

Attendees will view the 2013 documentary film, “The Loving Story” (1 hr 14 min., NR) about a multiracial couple who were arrested, tried and convicted of the felony crime of “miscegenation” in Virginia in 1958. Two young ACLU lawyers took on the Lovings’ case. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of the Lovings on June 12, 1967 resulting in 16 states being ordered to overturn their bans on multiracial marriage.
The film stars Jane Alexander, Lindsay Almond Jr., Edward L. Ayers, Leon M. Bazile, and Hugo Black; and is directed by Nancy Buirski.
Following the film, facilitators will open a discussion, welcoming personal stories and thoughts on the film, historical perspectives on racism and multiracial marriage, and modern-day threats to the precedent setting Supreme Court decision.
The event will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Jan 14, 2023. It will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Antonio, 7150 West Interstate 10 (at the intersection of Interstates 10 and 410) San Antonio, TX 78213. Light snacks (movie-fare) and drinks will be provided.
