San Antonio Philharmonic Presents: Young People’s Concerts

San Antonio Philharmonic Presents: Young People’s ConcertsA Celebration of Black Composers 0 Add to DreamList

Event Details

Celebrate DreamWeek with concerts for young students with a program uniquely dedicated to Black composers who have made tremendous contributions to classical symphonic music despite significant obstacles.

The Philharmonic will present two 50-minute concerts (one at 9:45; a second at 11:10), targeted to 3rd to 5th graders from local schools. The program is designed to expose students in a live concert to music from composers of African descent who have made significant contributions to symphonic music. Teachers have access to a Teacher Guide prior to the concert to familiarize students with the selected works and composers.
Concert selections include:
• Fanfare on “Amazing Grace” (2003), Adolphus Hailstork (born 1941)
• Allegro from Symphony No. 2 in D major (1779), Joseph Bologne, “Chevalier de Saint Georges” (1745-1799)
• Humor: Animato from Symphony No. 1, “Afro-American” (1930), William Grant Still (1895-1978)
• Juba Dance from Symphony No. 1 in E minor, (1931-1932), Florence Smith Price (1887-1953)
• Joyful Day: Allegro giocoso from African Suite (1944), Fela Sowande (1905-1987)
• Global Warming [excerpt] (1990), Michael Abels (born 1962)
• Starburst (2012), Jessie Montgomery (born 1981)
• The Bamboula, Op. 75 (Rhapsodic Dance No. 1) [excerpt] (1910), Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)
